A Big Draw at the Library
October is Big Draw month, with events around the nation encouraging folk to take up their pencils and draw. You can join in at the library and museum.
Shetland Library is delighted to be hosting an exhibition by the artist and sculptor Tim Chamberlain. His show 'bound to remember' is a collection of 92 small sculptures which is touring libraries, and has already been exhibited in Falmouth, Newfoundland and Galashiels. The collection will be displayed in the upper mezzanine of the library, which will be turned into a 'drawing room' for the period of the exhibition. There will be paper and pencils available for anyone who wants to try sketching the sculptures, space to display your creations if you wish, and a chance to browse some of the library's collection of art books.
Tim, from the Scottish Borders, was last in Shetland 20 years ago. He said of his forthcoming visit:
“Bringing my collection here will be a great opportunity to present it within the context of the rich Norse heritage of Shetland and I am very grateful to Shetland Library for facilitating this opportunity.
As a child in 1986, walking the shore of Yell and Unst, I became preoccupied with the search for sea-thrown bones and drift-wood. 20 years later here I am again with a collection still fired by that passion, with the insight of these fragments as traces of presence, of a mediation: animals allowing us to survive within that construct we call ‘nature'.”
He will also be running two workshops at the Shetland museum. The first is on Saturday 6th October and costs £10. It is a fun and creative workshop using the visual relationships between materials, drawing and making, as well as a ‘journey of words’ with local poet Jen Hadfield. It includes a visit to the library to see the exhibition. The second is on Saturday 13th October and is a Big Draw drop-in workshop. The exhibition in the library runs from the 1st to the 20th of October and entry is free.
