Early Years Dialect Resource Pack
Ditty Box Launch
On Monday 8th October the Dialect Ditty Box is being launched by the Shetland Islands Council, Schools Service and Shetland ForWirds.
The Dialect Ditty Box is a new pre-school resource pack that has been created by Creative Links in the Schools Service and Shetland ForWirds Education Group. It’s intended to help support and develop dialect activity in pre-school education.
Teachers were able to contribute to the project through a series of twilight workshops. It is hoped that dialect will be incorporated across the curriculum, and with teachers input a wide range of resources have been produced. The pack contains both traditional and new rhymes, stories, poems and songs that are educational and enjoyable. The material is presented in an appealing style to engage and enthral pre-school children. It is also practical and user-friendly for staff and includes activity suggestions and additional resources.
A CD has also been produced to assist staff who do not speak the dialect and for children to enjoy. A number of volunteers and artists dedicated time to recording the material contained in the pack. This CD was funded by Shetland ForWirds along with several Community Councils.
The Dialect Ditty Box will be presented to 35 nurseries, playgroups and educational settings (eg: Family Centre, Library) in Shetland following the launch.
