Launch of Calendar illustrating Shetland's links with Tamil Nadu
A calendar illustrating Shetland’s links with Tamil Nadu is being launched this weekend.
After the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami Shetland decided to offer help and establish an exchange scheme, promoting different skills. People from Shetland have volunteered to work in Tamil Nadu and several school staff from Tharangambadi have spent time in Shetland. Jeanette Nowak, from Shetland Library and Jimmy Moncrieff, from Shetland Amenity Trust, were the first two Shetland people to take part in the scheme.
The cover of the calendar (pictured) shows Yasotha Kathirvel, a teacher at the HOPE Foundation school in Tharangambadi, standing in front of Jeanette’s mural of Mid Yell Voe. Painted from memory with commercial house paints, the picture enabled Jeanette to describe her home in Shetland so many miles away. Unknown to her at that time, Yasotha would stand at the side of the real Mid Yell Voe, when she came to Shetland some months later, as part of the skills exchange.
Calendars priced £2.50 will be available from the Library, Amentity Trust, Mid Yell Junior High School and the Craft Fair.
Profits from the calendar will go towards supporting projects in Tharangambadi.
