World language books, DVD's and dual language publications at Shetland Library

Councillors, young people and students from one of the English classes run by Adult Learning marked Cultural Diversity Day in Shetland Library with the launch of an exciting new collection of world language books, DVD’s and dual language publications.

The library has been successful in securing over £23,000 in funding from the Scottish Government to improve the quality of public library provision for both local people and incoming new workers and their families.

The money paid for new books and audio-visual resources in English and other languages, a self-issue machine and out-of-hours return facility, plus the transfer of some dialect recordings to a digital format.  Over 1,300 new items, in 19 languages have been purchased and are now available to the public.

To help people find what they want, leaflets in English and six other languages have been prepared.

In March, the First Minister, the Rt. Hon. Alex Salmond MP MSP launched the first phase of the project, by checking out the first book on the self-issue machine, which along with the out-of-hours return point outside the library, introduced greater flexibility for all users.  He said “as a hub of Shetland life it is vital that this library reaches out to the entire community.  New facilities will benefit those just beginning to discover the joys of reading – and the many people from outside Scotland who’ve made Shetland their home in recent years.”

Silvija Crook, Library and Information Manager said “We are delighted to have been able to make these improvements to our service, through the funding from the Scottish Government.  The self-issue and out-of-hours return facilities were the first phase.  Now we have over 1,300 new books, DVD’s and learning packs and leaflets in a range of languages.  These are all free to borrow and the library is free to join”
