Work continues apace on the Kantersted

Work is well underway on building the two new buildings on the former site of the Kantersted Care Home. The largest of these will provide short breaks (respite care) for adults with learning disabilities; the smaller building will accommodate 4 tenants with learning disabilities on a permanent basis.

The buildings are on schedule for handover to the Community Care Service at the end of October, they will then need to be fully furnished and equipped before opening in January 2007.

The buildings will replace and expand the existing service at Craigielea. However, the service users have decided to have a permanent reminder of the service they are leaving behind, by voting to name the new short break building ‘Newcraigielea’.

One of the challenges faced by the architect was to design buildings which could cater for the wide range of people who will be using the service. One solution has been to arrange the short break unit so each wing can run separately if required. This will help the care staff to meet the needs of both frail and boisterous service users at the same time.

Although staff will transfer from Craigielea, additional staff will be taken on to meet the growing demand for services of this type. The demand is due to the rise in the number of people with learning disabilities reaching adulthood.
