HM Inspectorate of Education Report on Bressay Primary School

and Nursery Class

Bressay Primary School and Nursery Class were inspected in September 2007 as part of a national sample of primary and nursery education.

The members of the inspection team commented that the school and the nursery provide a very good standard of pastoral care and that relationships with parents and the community were strong and productive.  They note that the Head Teacher is well respected by staff and pupils and that he is committed to the well-being of the pupils and had established an inclusive atmosphere within the school.  During their visit the inspectors acknowledged the progress being made by the younger children within the high quality nursery provision.  They were also impressed by the well-behaved and courteous pupils throughout the school.  The well-maintained, high quality accommodation received very favourable comment from the inspection team.

The inspectors also identified the need to develop further aspects of the teaching and learning, and the school curriculum.  There is a need to raise attainment and to ensure that the range and quality of the learning experiences meet the needs of all the pupils, including those who receive additional support; this will require more rigorous monitoring and evaluation.

Helen Budge, Head of Schools said that she ‘was pleased that the inspectors recognised and appreciated the commitment of the Head Teacher and the staff and the work they had done in establishing such an inclusive ethos and in building up good relationships with the community.  At this stage in the development of the school the action points provide clear strategic direction for the next phase of the school’s work and the central Schools Service is working with the Head Teacher and the staff on these.’
