Ann Cleeves Visits Shetland

Shetland Library is pleased to announce a busy programme of visits and events for author Ann Cleeves, who is in Shetland from 12th to 17th May.

Ann, author of over 20 published novels, has just published White Nights, which is the second of her Shetland quartet and the follow up to Raven Black.

Her tour starts in Unst on Monday 12th, where she will be in the Baltasound Community Library from 4pm to 6pm.  Ann will be recommending some of her own favourite crime authors.  Everyone is invited to pop in and meet her, and she’ll be happy to sign books along the way.

On Tuesday evening, Bressay Book Group plays host with an event at the Bressay Hall, which is also open to the public.  There will be a reading from Ann, a chance to discuss her books, and music by young fiddler Miriam Brett.

On Wednesday evening the Library in Lerwick is the setting for a special event which combines the local launch of White Nights with a talk by archivist Brian Smith about a real Shetland murder case from the 19th Century.  The Shetland Times shop will be selling copies of White Nights.  This event is unsuitable for children due to the upsetting nature of some of the material in Brian’s talk.  Booking is advised, with tickets priced at £2 available at Shetland Library.  Proceeds will go to charity.

The Library has also set up visits to Baltasound, Brae and Aith schools and sessions with Yell Writers Group and Whalsay book group.  Ann is also booked to do a signing at the tourist office, a writing workshop at the museum and another one for Shetland Arts - so it is a busy week but one that Ann very much wanted to take on.

‘It’s always a joy to come back to the islands.   This is the only way I can think of to thank Shetlanders for the help they’ve given in the writing of the books’, she says.

Karen Fraser of Shetland Library said: “We’re really happy to organise these events.  Ann’s books are really promoting Shetland abroad.  She’s been cheerfully willing to take on as many visits as we can arrange for her, and we’ve had lots of goodwill from everyone else who is helping out.  I think we’ve arranged a varied programme which gives a lot of her readers the chance to meet her. ”
