Schools' Sailing successes
Almost 200 school pupils have so far enjoyed sailing taster sessions across Shetland, thanks to an innovative project led by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Scotland and local boating clubs.
Visiting RYA Senior Instructor, Annick Guclu, from Fife, is in the isles for a five week period to lead the sessions that aim to encourage more young sailors into the sport. Over the last four weeks, taster sessions have been offered to school pupils in Unst, Yell, Brae and Lerwick. The last week of the programme takes place next week (19th – 23rd June) in Sandwick, where around 40 youngsters are already signed up.
Each session, using Pico dinghies, has lasted around 2-3 hours and taken youngsters through the basics of sailing, including familiarisation with the rigging; and the techniques of helming and crewing. The target age group has been pupils aged 10 to 16 years old, who have little or no previous experience of sailing.
Commenting on the success of the project so far, Ms. Guclu said – “All the participants have shown loads of enthusiasm and been really positive about their sailing experience. I hope they continue to show an interest in sailing through the network of Shetland boating clubs.”
Volunteer sailors from local boating clubs have been closely involved throughout the project, providing essential safety boat cover as well as general assistance and access to local club facilities. Ms. Guclu again commented – “This project wouldn’t have been possible without the commitment of local volunteers. I’d like to thank all of them for their huge contribution, as well as Head Teachers and school staff, who have all been very supportive.”
The Schools’ Sailing Project is jointly funded and co-ordinated by RYA Scotland, local boating Clubs and the Active Schools Team of Shetland Islands Council.
Young sailors also have an opportunity to try sailing during the forthcoming Shetland Summer Festival , The Johnsmas Foy, when a team of RYA instructors will also be in Shetland to provide more taster sessions at six different venues for youngsters aged 8 to14 years old.
