Midnight Football Kicks Off This Weekend
The Bank of Scotland Midnight Football League starts up again in Lerwick this Saturday (12th January) following the success of the programme last year. Young people between the ages of 12 and 18 years old will have a chance to play indoor five-a-side football at the Clickimin Leisure Centre on Saturday nights from 10pm to 11pm. (Registration on the first night will take place from 9.30pm).
The Midnight Football League is a joint national initiative by the Scottish Football Association, local authorities and local police forces to reduce youth crime and anti-social behaviour. The programme first took place in Shetland in early 2007, where an average of around 30 or so teenagers turned out each week during the ten-week programme.
This year’s programme will also run for ten consecutive Saturdays, from 12th January to 15th March, ending just two weeks before the schools' Easter break. Staff from the Council's Youth Work and Neighbourhood Support Teams and local police officers will be on hand to co-ordinate matches and to mix with youngsters each night. Bibs, balls and bottled water will be provided free of charge.
The 2008 Midnight League in Shetland is sponsored by Bank of Scotland and supported by the Scottish Football Association, Shetland Islands Council, Northern Constabulary and Shetland Recreational Trust.
