Library calendar and St Ringans history booklet out for Christmas

Shetland Library is producing a calendar this year

Entitled Hidden Corners of Lerwick, it is the work of graduate placement worker Trevor Jamieson. He has mostly used his own photos and added a whimsical commentary on some of the bygone delights of Lerwick such as the Old Smithy and the Seafoods’ fish huts.

Trevor says of his calendar: ‘I’ve waited a long time for the opportunity to use these photos as they’re maybe not exactly postcard material.  The emphasis is not meant to be the prettiness of the completed calendar, rather the memories it will invoke’.

As part of his placement at the library, Trevor has also prepared a booklet on the history of St Ringans church, where the library is now housed. This was in response to the interest in the building expressed by customers, many of them tourists.

Trevor says: ‘the material for the booklet was mostly found in the library itself and this, I think, does much to illustrate the resources we have at hand. There’s nothing to hinder others from taking on similar projects and making use of the resources available in a similar way. As someone interested in local history I like photographs of scenes that have since altered. I hope the calendar and the booklet will reawaken fond memories and in so doing encourage others to explore Shetland’s past’.

Both the calendar and the booklet will be available from the Shetland Library from Friday 1st December. They are priced at £2.50 each.
