Councillor Andrew Hughson checks out Health Living

Heath Checks Nurse for Shetland Island’s Council, Elaine Nicolson tests Andrew’s cholesterol reading as part of his health check.  The Council recognises the importance of promoting health and well being and monthly health check clinics for SIC staff and members have been provided for the last 3 years to raise awareness of the benefits to be gained from healthy living and taking a pro-active approach to identifying any developing health conditions at an early stage.

The clinics are provided on a rotating basis around the Council’s work locations to motivate and encourage staff to lead a healthy life.  Twelve staff are offered a health check each month and the information provided is confidential to them.  It’s proved to be a very popular initiative and some staff have benefited from invaluable early alerts about developing health concerns that they have followed up with their own Doctors.

Andrew said “As someone who recently had the likelihood of a hereditary heart problem identified at a health check, I cannot recommend this imitative highly enough.  Since discovering I had high levels of cholesterol in my blood, I have changed to a healthier diet and I’ve recently taken out an SIC Corporate Leisure Subscription at Clickimin.  I hope highlighting my experience will encourage more people to take that very small important, first step towards a healthier life”
