SIC Graduate Placement Scheme - 8th year of a great success story

The Graduate Placement Scheme has been a great success for the Council in attracting and retaining talent in Shetland.  115 graduate placements have been filled in the Council since the scheme started in 2000 in project areas such as Waste Management, Homelessness, Social Work and the Global Classroom in Schools.

The scheme is designed to provide a work based development opportunity and has no guarantee of a job at the end of the 12 month placement.  However, during those 8 years 28 of these graduates have found permanent work within the Council and 21 have been successful in finding jobs in Shetland.  A surprising outcome of the scheme is the number that have returned to full-time study.  16 people have discovered a new career interest following their placement and have returned to University, taken up teacher training and in one case, to undertake a PHD.  A further 11 have taken jobs South.

The Council is proud of the contribution the Graduate Placement Scheme is making to attracting, developing and retaining talent in Shetland and if you want to be part of this success story and will achieve your degree between 1 May 2007 and 31 December 2008 please contact Doreen Thomason on 01595 744576 or at Doreen.Thomason@shetland.gov.uk.
