Three Stages of Green Excellence - Aith Junior High School Receives its First Eco School Award
Aith Junior High School has begun 2007 on a high note having been successfully assessed for its first Eco School Award. The award covers the whole school from the Nursery, through all stages of the primary and throughout the secondary.
The award was based on the work carried out on waste prevention, recycling and litter control. Other aspects of the school including initiatives to improve the school grounds and to operate as a healthy environment through encouragement of active play, healthy eating and emotional support were also taken into consideration.
“We were particularly impressed by the bright, tidy aspect of school both inside and out and by the knowledge of the pupils at all levels about what environmental work had been carried out and why. The school notice boards deserved special mention as did the enthusiasm of the pupils on the Eco School Committee.” (Mary Lisk, Lead Assessor on behalf of Keep Scotland Beautiful).
The Eco School Programme is an international initiative operated throughout Europe and is organised in Scotland through Keep Scotland Beautiful. It is designed to encourage whole school action for the environment. It is an environmental management tool, a learning resource and an internationally recognised award scheme.
Shetland now holds 36 Eco school awards with one third of all schools being accredited with Eco School status. Aith is currently the only Junior High School in Shetland to hold a full Green Flag, with Sandwick Junior High and Baltasound Junior High both holding bronze awards.
