Cooling Off Period for Contracts Signed at Your Door

Trading Standards, Citizens Advice and the Police have received a number of calls in recent days from people in Shetland who have signed contracts at their door to transfer their telephone service to another provider.

Some callers have felt pressured into signing up, while others believe they were misled by the salesman.  Some have simply changed their mind, having had a chance to reflect on their decision.

If you have signed a contract at your door, and you did not invite the sales person to call, then (in most cases) you have the right to cancel the contract – and you do not have to give a reason for doing so.

The law requires the sales person to give you a notice detailing your cancellation rights, the length of the cooling-off period within which you can cancel, and information on how you can cancel the contract.  Even if you did not receive this information, you can still cancel the contract by writing to the business within seven days of the visit by the sales person.

If you need further advice about how to cancel such a contract, you can call Consumer Direct on 08454040506, Citizens Advice on 01595694696, or Trading Standards on 01595744887.

For more information on dealing with uninvited sales people, visit the Council’s website at www.shetland.gov.uk/tradingstandards.

If you would like a No uninvited sales people pack, you can pick one up from the Council offices at Grantfield, or email Trading Standards at trading.standards@shetland.gov.uk or call 01595744887 and they’ll send one out to you.

Ends.
