Are you having a Barbeque or Event providing Food for the Public?

Environmental Health wish to remind you of the importance of ensuring the food you provide is prepared safely. Washing your hands regularly when preparing food can reduce cross contamination and reduce the risk of food poisoning.

To assist you in safe food preparation Environmental Health have 5 free-standing “Cascade” wash hand basins available for hire. The wash hand basins are available for £10 per hire for community groups or charities, or £50 +£10 each extra day for business hire. To hire the wash hand basin for your event contact Environmental Health on 01595 744800.

Environmental Health are also recommending that anyone preparing barbeques this summer follow these simple tips for keeping their food safe:

  • Wait until the charcoal is glowing red before you start to cook;
  • Make sure frozen food is properly thawed before you cook it;
  • Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw meat;
  • Use separate utensils for raw and cooked meat;
  • Never put cooked food on a plate or surface that has been used for raw meat;
  • Keep raw meat in a sealed container away from ready-to-eat foods, such as burger buns and salads;
  • Don't put raw meat products next to cooked or partially cooked meat on the barbecue;
  • Check that the centre of the food is piping hot before you serve it, that there are no pink bits in sausages, chicken, kebabs and burgers and that the juices run clear;
  • Consider pre-cooking food in the oven to ensure it is thoroughly cooked before finishing it off on the barbecue;
