Seagull Nest Removal
It has been noted that seagulls are already beginning to roost on roofs and chimneys in Lerwick. The Environmental Health Service wish to remind householders and businesses that a nest removal service is provided by the Council throughout the seagull breeding season. There is a charge for this service unless you are on a means tested benefit.
Seagulls cause a nuisance in built up areas. They are noisy, foul cars and buildings, tear open refuse bags and when protecting young their aggressive behaviour can be intimidating to the public. The removal of nests and eggs is intended to control the population of seagulls by preventing the hatching of chicks.
Nest removal is only one part of the seagull control strategy. It is essential to reduce food sources by not dropping litter, not feeding gulls and covering refuse bags to prevent access to food. It is also important to stop seagulls roosting by proofing buildings with netting, post and wire system or spikes.
Nests can only be removed if the person responsible for the building requests the service. If you wish to arrange for Environmental Health to remove a nest from your building please contact 01595 744806.
