Do you Speak a Second Language?
If you do, would you be willing to join the council team of translators who help new comers to Shetland to settle in.
For example you might help a Russian family who has just moved here and want to enrol their child at school. The problem is they don’t speak much English yet. A local volunteer translator can help the family communicate with teachers and education officials. Another example might be to help a Czech family understand how to find out how they can find childcare. We are particularly looking for speakers of Polish, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Slovenian, Slovakian, Estonian or Czech. If your English is fluent and you also speak another language, please contact us if you’d be willing to help out with translating and interpreting. It doesn’t need to take a lot of your time, but is useful, important and rewarding work.
There may also be paid work in some circumstances.
