Local Action Fund
As part of its continuing commitment to tackle youth offending and anti-social behaviour, the Scottish Executive has awarded the Shetland Community Safety Partnership a further £20,000 each year for 2006/7 and 2007/8 under the auspices of the Local Action Fund. The aim of this Fund is to support the provision of services, projects and activities available to all young people rather than focus on young people who have offended or are at risk of offending.
In the past, small financial awards from the Local Action Fund have enabled a number of small community-based projects to increase services for the young people in their area: Tingwall Youth Club were able to provide sports nights for young people during the winter; Shetland Skatepark Association received a contribution towards the cost of building a permanent skatepark in Lerwick; Shetland Trampoline Squad purchased equipment that would help coach young gymnasts; Delting Dolphins Amateur Swimming Club received funding to help them host three inter-club swimming galas; funding was awarded to the Sandveien Neighbourhood Centre as a contribution towards building outdoor sports facilities; Unst Youth Centre purchased disco equipment so that their members could learn DJ-ing skills and then host their own discos; funding was awarded to the Shetland Befriending Scheme to enable them to extend their service; Whalsay Junior Hockey Club purchased new sports equipment; Whitedale Youth Club bought a range of equipment for its members to use during the winter months and funding was awarded to the SIC’s Community Development Service to help set up youth cafes in Burra & Brae.
If you would like to apply for an award from the Local Action Fund 2006-8, you can download an application form and guidance notes from www.shetland.gov.uk/communitysafety.
