Scottish Youth Parliament - Shetland Elections
The Scottish Youth Parliament election for the 2 seats within the Shetland constituency is due to take place on Thursday 24th March. In an all-electronic election, voting will take place through the Young Scot Shetland web page (www.youngscot.org/shetland). Young people aged 14 to 25 years are eligible to vote, with online voting running from 8am to 10pm.
Youth Services Officer, Martin Summers who is promoting the election said, “We have set up voting stations across Shetland, to encourage as much participation as possible. They will be in:
- Secondary schools for pupils
- Shetland College/NAFC for students
- The Bridges Project
- Shetland Youth Information Services from 9pm – 5pm
- Learning Centre at Shetland Library from 9am – 8pm
The four candidates Barry Meheut, Nicole Mouat, Emily Shaw and Cameron Stevenson are all looking forward to the big day. The process to register a vote should be really easy. All that young people will require is access to the Young Scot website and their Young Scot National Entitlement Card”.
As part of the preparations for the election, Shetland is hosting the first Scottish Youth Parliament Election Debate at the Town Hall on Wednesday 9th March from 7pm.
Councillor Bill Manson said “I’d just like to ask young people to remember to send in questions, whether or not they can attend on the day. It’s important that the candidates are aware of the issues currently interesting young people and that their stances on those issues are probed and as widely known as possible to their electorate”
Martin Summers who is also Local Election Coordinator added, “Young people must send in questions by 28th Feb or register attendance through me at Youth Services, Islesburgh Complex. They can also email me on martin.summers@shetland.gov.uk”.
The results of the election will be announced by Jan Riise, Returning Officer for the Scottish Parliament Constituency of Shetland on Monday 28th March from 2pm at the Town Hall, Lerwick and posted online.
