The planning system, and Shetland Islands Council's planning policies, guide the future development and use of land in the long term public interest. The aim is to ensure that development and changes in land use occur in suitable locations and are sustainable. The planning system must also provide protection from inappropriate development. Planning Control is the process through which decisions are made on applications for planning permission. The Development Management Service currently deals with over 450 applications for planning permission and other related consents each year.
As part of this process, the public and others are given the opportunity to make their views known and have them considered in the decision making process. We welcome comments on individual planning applications. We try to make decisions promptly, to ensure high quality development on the ground and to respect individual rights. Whatever your interest in the planning process, we want to offer you the best possible service; please let us know whether or not we have done so.
