Development Management
Our staff in the Development Management Service are responsible for assessing applications including planning permissions, listed building consent, conservation area consent, advertisement consent and proposals submitted under environmental impact assessment regulations.
We also:
- give advice to the public on planning policies and the planning system;
- encourage and undertake free pre-application discussions with applicants and agents;
- monitor implementation of approved applications and, where appropriate, undertake enforcement action; and
- prepare planning appeal statements and give evidence at
public inquiries
The planning system, and Shetland Islands Council's planning policies, guide the future development and use of land in the long term public interest. The aim is to ensure that development and changes in land use occur in suitable locations and are sustainable. The planning system must also provide protection from inappropriate development. Planning Control is the process through which decisions are made on applications for planning permission. The Development Management Service currently deals with over 450 applications for planning permission and other related consents each year.
As part of this process, the public and others are given the opportunity to make their views known and have them considered in the decision making process. We welcome comments on individual planning applications. We try to make decisions promptly, to ensure high quality development on the ground and to respect individual rights.
