Baltasound is a large and well-serviced harbour sheltered by the isle of Balta, across the mouth of the sound and by the high ground to the north and west. The marina may not suitable for some visiting yachts.

There is also a suitable anchorage south west of the pier.

Local Services

During the summer the harbour is host to various events including a regatta and fishing competitions as well as music evenings in the hall.

Rounding Muness, on the south-eastern corner of Unst, Skuda Sound leads to the exposed anchorage of Uyeasound, where there is a small dock (only accessible at high tide), toilets, telephone, a youth hostel and an annual regatta.

Basta Voe, a former naval anchorage is a good place to see Otters at dawn and dusk. Recent excavations have also uncovered an Iron Age settlement at the Tafts of Bayanne, by Sellafirth.
