Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages

General Information

Local authorities in Scotland have a statutory duty to provide a service for the registration of births, stillbirths, deaths and marriages in each of their regististration districts.

In January 2007, Shetland Islands registration area became one registration district, it now has 21 registration offices. Twenty of these offices are home based registrars who carry out the registrations in their own homes on a "by appointment" basis. The main office is based in the County Buildings in Lerwick and is open 10 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 4 pm Monday to Friday.

Any birth or death that occurs anywhere in Scotland can be registered in any registration district in Scotland.

All information regarding the registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages as well as the forms required for getting married in Scotland can be found on the General Register Office for Scotland's website.
