Approved Venues for Civil Marriages
In June 2002 the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1977 was changed to allow civil marriages to be solemnised at any approved place. Further information about the regulations is available from the General Register Office of Scotland
The local authority is required to give public notice of all applications and a period of 21 days is allowed for any objections to be submitted. Therefore applicants should ensure that applications are submitted a minimum of one calendar month before the approval is required.
Hotels etc can apply for a period approval which, if granted, lasts for 3 years.
A couple can also apply for a temporary approval at a place of their choice.
The application fee for either a period or temporary approval is £195.
