Roads
Welcome to the Roads homepage of Shetland Islands Council. These pages are still being developed and will be added to over the coming months.
Roads is responsible for the management and maintenance of 1,045 kilometres (650 miles) of public roads in Shetland. That includes the following:-
- Management of all public roads - keep records of all roads, streetlights, traffic signs, etc. maintained by the Council.
- General road maintenance - assessing, prioritising and where possible repairing road defects identified by our own staff or reported to us by road users.
- Winter Service - gritting or clearing of snow from roads and footways.
- Road improvements - both major and minor improvements to roads, as funds permit.
- Streetlights - check streetlights every 2 weeks (4 weeks in summer) and repair any that are faulty.
