Scord Quarry - Telephone: 01595 744198 Fax: 01595 744196
The Scord Quarry is situated on the A970 on the approach to Scalloway from Lerwick. The Quarry has been in existence since the early 1930's. The rock is a metamorphic Schist and produces hard and durable aggregate which is very suitable for road surfacing materials. The quarry also has an Asphalt plant and a bituminous emulsion production plant.
Bitumen is delivered in bulk to the quarry in insulated sea-going tankers that are off-loaded at Scalloway and stored in tanks at the quarry until needed. The quarry extracts up to 100,000 tonnes of aggregate each year and produces approximately 50,000 tonnes of coated product. It is the only asphalt plant in Shetland and has to meet the demands of the Shetland community. As well as meeting the islands requirements for asphalt the quarry also produces a range of dry-stone aggregates and manufactures butuminous emulsion for surface dressing.
Overlooking the picturesue town of Scalloway the quarry has to take its environmental impact extremely seriously. Considerable investment has been made in recent years to reduce any adverse impact from having a quarry in close proximity to the town. Any nuisance from air-borne dust has virtually been eliminated. All the crushing plant, screens and conveyors are now totally enclosed.
Planning consent has recently been obtained to extend the quarry to the south-east. This consent will allow quarrying to continue for a number of years and the eventual aim is to leave a cutting that is designed to facilitate a new road alignment to the A970 which will bypass the tight bends on the existing road.
