Roads Maintenance
All road maintenance operations are coordinated through Road's staff based at Gremista. We have a number of operational depots located throughout the islands to enable a quick response to be mounted to deal with any roads related problems. Our operatives are well trained, with a good understanding of local concerns/issues and are able to deal with road repairs in an efficient and professional manner.Work is completed to high standards of quality, workmanship and safety.
The Shetland Road Network is divided up into geographical areas. Each area has its own Area Engineer assisted by an Engineering Technician, Senior Foreman and an area workforce. For details relevent to a particular area please click on the appropriate menu option on the right.
The roads maintenance section is also responsible for providing surfacing, surface dressing and winter maintenance services. More details are available by selecting the appropriate menu option. We also manage the Council's quarry (Scord Quarry) and asphalt production plant at Scalloway. (More details available using the menu on the right.)
The road safety plan provides details about road inspections, the types of inspections carried out and their frequencies. It also gives an indication of different types of defects and the threshold levels at which remedial action is taken. These values are indicative and other factors such as the location, volume of traffic use, pedestrian use etc. will all influence the priority for dealing with individual problems.
Each year the Roads throughout Scotland are surveyed to assess their condition. These surveys are paid for by each authority however the operation is coordinated through the Scottish Executive. In 2006 the survey showed that Shetlands Roads displayed the best overall condition of any authority in Scotland.
