Roads Inspections
All the "A" class roads and a percentage of all other road classes are surveyed throughout Scotland on an annual basis using a specialised machine that measures surface texture, rutting and the road profile. The results of these surveys, known as the Scottish Roads Maintenance Condition Survey (SRMCS) are supplied to each authority and to the Scottish Executive. This allows year on year comparisons as well as inter-authority comparisons of the surface condition of the Scottish Road Network. Shetland's roads compare very favourably with all other areas of Scotland.
In addition to the above machine based survey we also carry out systematic visual inspections of the Network to determine the extent of maintenance work required and to set priorities so that the available budget is spent where it will deliver the greatest benefit in terms of safety and also to minimise disruption to the travelling public.
All roads and footways are inspected to an agreed timetable to identify defects likely to create a danger or serious inconvenience either to road users or to the wider community. These inspections are carried out by trained staff using portable GPS enabled tablet computers that record the routes inspected and log defects.
