Community Minibuses

 

The Council have a fleet of 5 minibuses situated around various areas of Shetland and available for hire by local community groups.

Requirements Needed Before Driving a Council Minibus:

Apart from the group completing an application for hire, the proposed driver of the minibus must satisfy the following requirements for insurance to be effective:

  • Must hold a valid full licence.
  • Must have a D1 entitlement on their driving licence or meet the following criteria:
    • have held a car licence (category B) for at least 2 years.
    • be aged over 21.
    • vehicle is under 3.5 tonnes and a maximum of 16 passenger seats.
    • do not tow a trailer of any kind.
    • only drive the minibus in the UK
  • Must complete a MiDAS application (available from Lesley Leask at Community Development)
  • Must provide a copy of their driving licence. If it is photocard licence, both sides of the photocard plus the paper counterpart must be copied.

 

Errors, Ommissions and Inaccuracies:

An application containing any errors, ommissions or inaccuracies will be returned unauthorised.  Previous applications have been returned due to:

  • No copy of photocard included.
  • Only one side of photocard copied.
  • No copy of Counterpart Driving Licence included.
  • Addresses on the driving licence differs from that on the application form.  Please note that it is a legal requirement to inform DVLA when you change your name and/or address. Failure to do so could result in a fine of up to £1,000.

 

Training:

All persons must undertake and successfully complete the theory and practical sections of the MiDAS training (if they have not already done so). The training deals with all aspects of minibus use, including the evacuation of passengers in an emergency situation.
