Short breaks for children and young people

Short Breaks for Children and Young People is a support service for children and young people with complex additional support needs. The service provides ‘respite’ support to families in Shetland.

Our Aims

Short Breaks for Children and Young People Service aims to provide a high standard of care to children and young people according to their specific needs and is based on person-centred planning principles. We will continue to consult with the young people and their families during the entire period they access the service to ensure that we continue to provide the best support possible.

The support offered is intended to provide opportunities for:

  • children and young people to have experiences that are both positive and beneficial
  • carers to have breaks which allow them to continue providing care and helps to alleviate carer’s stress
  • children and young people to develop or increase their independence skills
  • children and young people to engage with others

Referral Process

A referral for support can be made via Duty Intake Team at Children’s Social Work. You can contact Duty Intake Team via the main Children’s Services switchboard number 01595 744000 or via email childrens&families-intake@shetland.gov.uk. A Child’s Plan will need to be completed in order to identify the level of required support.
