Aids and Adaptations
Specialist Aids
This scheme was set up to help vulnerable people to gain access to specialist equipment as and when required, which is not the responsibility of the Health Board.
Recipients must be "aged or infirm or necessitous and deserving", resident in Shetland and in need of assistance.
All aids supplied are returned when no longer required.
Referral is made following a community care assessment or by the person directly, their carer, relative, GP or community nurse.
An occupational therapist will then assess individual need.

Aids and Adaptations
If you are having difficulty getting around your home or using your bath, Social Care may be able to help with aids and adaptations for your home. An occupational therapist will visit your home and discuss with you the problems you are having. This may, for example require the provision of specialist equipment to help you manage everyday tasks such as the installation of a walk-in shower, or handrails.
These services are intended for people who have serious disabilities, are at risk of hospital or residential admission, are returning from hospital, or who have carers who need assistance in their tasks.
