Charitable Trust

Shetland Charitable Trust seeks to benefit Shetland and its inhabitants. Their aim is to improve the quality of life for people living in Shetland, especially in the areas of:

  • Social Need
  • Leisure
  • Environment
  • Education

The Charitable Trust contributes to various local projects such as:

  • Walter & Joan Gray Eventide Home - Construction & running costs of day care
  • Shetland Amenity Trust
  • Shetland Arts Trust
  • Shetland Field Studies Group
  • Shetland Islands Citizens Advice Bureau
  • Shetland Alcohol Trust
  • Shetland Recreational Trust
  • Pensioners/Disabled Persons Christmas Bonus Grants
  • Voluntary Bodies
  • Specialist Aids
  • Independence at Home Scheme
  • Social Assistance Grants

The funds are used to provide large-scale facilities, assist local self-help groups, support traditional industries and assist in the development of new ones.

In terms of Social Care, the Charitable Trust contribute towards the running costs of day care services at the Walter & Joan Gray Eventide Home in Scalloway and several schemes dedicated to the needs of vulnerable people.

The Independence at Home Scheme - to assist the infirm and/or elderly remain in their own home wherever possible.

Social Assistance Grants - to help those in need of financial assistance or material assistance due to age or infirmity.

Specialist Aids - to provide specialist aids to vulnerable people, which are not the responsibility of the Health Board, to improve their quality of life.

Eligibility for these schemes is assessed by certain criteria.

Applicants must be "aged or infirm or necessitous and deserving".

They also provide support to many local action and self-help groups formed and run by members of the public to support particular groups of vulnerable or disabled people.

By building on the enthusiasm of such local initiatives, they can help them to achieve their objectives while retaining the independence and enterprise which brought them into existence.

 

The Trustees Board consists of 24 members.

The Trust's charitable expenditure is based on recommendations made by the Shetland Islands Council's committees.
