Inspection of Care Homes

There are 12 residential care establishments in Shetland which are inspected by Officers from the Highland Council twice a year. They carry out one announced and one unannounced inspection to ensure that residents are receiving satisfactory and safe care.

These units provide services for older people, people with physical disabilities, people with learning disabilities and children and young teenagers.

They are run by the Shetland Islands Council and the Church of Scotland. There are no private establishments in Shetland.

Social Care receives copies of the Inspectors' Reports, including any recommendations after each visit.

Any recommendations can then be acted upon and put into practice. The reports include information on all aspects of the home:

  • who runs it - where it is - what service it provides
  • a description of the home
  • records held, such as safety, accident details, care plans, menus, medication etc.
  • staff-procedures, training and staff/patient relations
  • recommendations for improvements and commendations

Daycare facilities are also inspected on the same basis.

Copies of Inspection Reports are available to members of the public by request, free of charge.
