Care Services
"Ageing is part of all our lives. The challenge for all of us is to ensure we meet the needs and expectations of the increasing number of older people now and in the future. Getting our public services right is relevant not just for today's older people but for us all."
Minister for Health & Community Care
Better Government for Older People Report - May 2000
Care services in Shetland are well developed and wide-ranging. They are provided by the Council through Social Care, the Church of Scotland, Shetland Charitable Trust, NHS Shetland and by numerous voluntary organisations.
All applications for short or long term residential care are made through Social Care.
A single shared assessment will ensure that any services provided will be appropriate to individual needs and that service users are fully involved in making decisions about their care.
These pages contain information on Care Services, Specialist Dementia Services, Care Homes, Financial Assessments, Housing Services, Inspections and a link to information on services available to all Community Care groups.
Many older people value their independence. Extensive home care provision, day care, respite services and community care planning ensure that older people can remain at home for as long as possible. If that becomes no longer feasible, because of a deterioration in health or increasing frailty, more intensive service provision is required.
There are six rural care centres, which provide residential care, both respite and permanent, and day care to older people in their own area.
Service in Shetland are of a particularly high standard; staff training is regularly updated and care skills include health and safety, hygiene and safer people handling.
Multi-agency co-operation is necessary for the provision of services for the wide-ranging needs of older people.
