Frequently Asked Questions
Who can borrow the mats?
The mats are offered to any community groups who may wish to use them. So far they have been borrowed by community hall committees, schools, youth clubs, fundraising organisations, charities, leisure centres, resource centres and more!
How can I go about making a booking for the dance mats?
We have put the booking forms for dance mats available on a link at the bottom of this page. Before you complete the forms, we would advise that you contact us to check dates by e-mail or call us on 01595 744006. We can let you know if they are available on the dates that you are looking to borrow them.
Are the mats insured?
Each dance mat would cost around £1000 to replace and we need to know that your organisation would be able to meet this cost of repair or replacement if any items of equipment are damaged in use. The booking form asks groups who are borrowing dance mat equipment to check that that they have contents insurance in place. If your organisation is part of Shetland Islands Council, or you are running your activity in Council premises (e.g. a school) you will be covered by the Council’s insurance.
Do I need a trained operator to run the activity?
Yes - we are encouraging all user groups to send at least one person to be trained in using the mats. So far we have around 100 individuals trained to set up and run the activity. Training sessions are arranged periodically. Please contact the Sport & Leisure Service for details of the next training session. If you don’t have a trained person available to help set up and run the session, then, depending on availability, one of the Sport & Leisure staff may be able to help deliver the session.
How long is the training and how much does it cost?
The training is free, lasts for about an hour and is an informal, fun session where you will get to try out the dance mats. By the end of the session, you will know how to set the system up and how to run the computer software.
Is the system easy to operate?
The system is very simple to operate – if left unattended, school pupils soon figure out how to load another dance song!!
