Shetland Sports Week

A Celebration of Shetland Sport and Commonwealth Games 2014

The 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow have the power to motivate the people of Scotland and capture the imagination of communities throughout the land. As well as the Games themselves in 2014 it is the desire and ambition of the Scottish Government and all partners involved that the games truly engage all parts of Scotland in sport, healthy living and various inspirational celebrations of our culture and heritage as a nation and as part of the Commonwealth.

As part of the Scottish Government’s legacy ambitions to engage communities across Scotland with the Commonwealth Games, the Games for Scotland programme has been designed to inspire, develop and support a range of exciting events and activities across the country. These events will engender pride in Scotland’s people around our hosting of the Games.

Updates

We will post regular updates so you know the progress we have made.(Most recent posts at the top)

Monday 22 August: The Team met with the Shetland Times today about a 2 page spread in Friday 26 paper.  The article will talk about What Sport can do for You and show everything that is happening across the islands as part of Shetland Sports Week. There are now 85 events and opportunities taking place during the week!!

Friday 19 August:  Invitations for the first part of the Launch Event on Saturday 3rd September at 11.00am have been sent.  There will also be spaces for the general public to watch this event but you’ll need to be there early for a seat!  The first sporting action of the day will be from 11.30am in the main hall and there are plenty of seats available so we want to see as large a crowd as possible for the Junior Inter County Select v League Champions in Netball followed by our Mini-Netballers getting a chance to go on court.  A list of events for the Saturday is already available on this page.

Thursday 18 August:  The Sport and Leisure Team have met with staff from Clickimin Leisure Centre to complete the bookings for the week.  Their expertise was also helpful in planning the Launch Event which will now take place in the Multi-Use studio with a mix of speakers, video pieces and photographs to set the ball rolling for  the week.

Tuesday 16 August: YouTube video clip has received 481 hits. Help us to reach our first milestone 0f 1081 by sharing the video clip throughout Shetland and beyond. It is 1081 days from the release of the video to the start of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, 2014.

Tuesday 16 August: 80% of the Sports Week schedule is now complete!

Monday 15 August: The deadline has been met to produce a 2 sided information leaflet about Shetland Sports Week which will be delivered to every address in Shetland the week before the event. The leaflet contains information on how to get involved and a timetable for the launch event on Saturday 3 September. The cost of the leaflet and delivery has been met entirely by Event Scotland and more details of other events will follow.

Plenty of laughing as the rugby ball makes its way along Commercial Street via many shopowners and staff.

Wednesday 3 August: Shetland Recreational Trust rural centres to provide extra activity during Shetland Sports Week. This is in addition to their normal extensive programming which you can find on www.srt.org.uk

Monday 1st August: Shetland Hockey and Shetland Table Tennis have confirmed their participation!

Friday 29 July: At a planning meeting today the team began to timetable some sports and events. It looks like the launch event on Saturday 3rd September will be very popular with a number of exhibition matches and demonstrations happening at the Clickimin Centre. It is early days yet but the team are excited about the progress. Although the week is mainly about Commonwealth Sports in Shetland looking ahead to 2014 the team are keen to give the opportunity to other sports clubs and associations who might like to get involved in some way.

Shetland Sports Week can now be found on Facebook. Help us build the profile of the week by submitting your sports photos and videos to us to upload and share with our friends. To email us your images please click here.

Monday 18th July: The Shetland Sports Week team have made contact with all the sports below and are starting to put the programme together.  It looks quite exciting given the positive response from clubs and athletes and the number of venues and spaces we can fill through the week.  The sports who are keen to support the event are:

Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Cycling, Gymnastics, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby 7s, Shooting, Squash, Table Tennis, Triathlon and Weight Lifting.

A number of Island Games medallists, Lerwick shopkeepers and local personalities have agreed to get behind Shetland Sports Week by appearing in a short video to promote the event.
