Active Schools Shetland

Children have a natural enthusiasm for physical activity and by introducing them to fun sport and physical activities at an early age, we hope to build on that interest and encourage participation that lasts a lifetime.

Active Schools is a term given to all schools in Scotland that provide pupils with sufficient opportunities to get active to the extent that it makes a positive contribution to their health. The national programme is led by sportscotland and more details are available on their website here

The fundamental aim of Active Schools is to give school-aged children the tools, motivation and opportunities to be more active throughout their school years and into adulthood. These opportunities are available before, during and after school, as well as in the wider community.

Some examples of the projects developed locally are:

  • TOP Play & TOP Sport
  • firstclub golf
  • Soccer One
  • Start to Play
  • Fit for Girls
  • Cycle Proficiency and Cycle Skills Training
  • After School and Lunch Time clubs
  • Motor Co-ordination Intervention
  • Small Schools Multi-Activity Days
  • Summer Coaching Camps

Active Shetland (Shetland Active Schools) goes from strength to strength. We are now working with a lot of sports ( e.g..football, golf, netball, rugby) and a lot of healthy activities (e.g. walking, cycling, dance) and some environmental and outdoor work (eg paths at Brae, days with Outdoor Education). We work closely with Shetland’s 33 schools and the Shetland Recreational Trust and are forging links with NHS Shetland (work with children with weight problems and others with undeveloped motor skills). We are hoping to develop further a project that was running between a Day Care Centre and some Primary pupils.

A major part of our activity is trying to involve children in all sorts of sports and games at lunchtimes and after school. In addition we try to provide quality activities at holiday times including several hours of intensive tuition in dance, football and netball.

We offer training and guidance to groups trying to make themselves more active and can loan equipment for use in Community Halls or other suitable spaces. We are part of the group that is trying to develop a strategy to make Shetland more active.

Hamnavoe Bog Jumping

What a way to start 2010 - Snow, snow and more snow - what an opportunity to be active - we should have created some sledging clubs!

Across primary, this year I plan to work with schools delivering the motor co-ordination groups for Early Years pupils and new this year will be the Hygiene, Healthy Eating and Activity in Primary Schools (HHEAPS) initiative where we join forces with Scottish Rugby and the Food Standards Agency on a mission to help primary pupils be fit and eat healthily and hygenically.

Clubgolf is about to start at Scalloway Primary School and I continue to deliver the Young Leaders programme; coaching and supporting upper primary pupils to lead sport and activity sessions for younger pupils in the school.

The final Soccer One event is on Thursday 20 May, the climax to another hugely successful project to create school football teams for boys and girls. The football theme will continue towards summer 2010 when the World Cup starts in South Africa of course. So expect plenty of football initiatives over the next year. Look out for Sports Leader Awards and Activity Fests also.

Whalsay, Whiteness and Tingwall schools are in line to complete a John Muir Award this year and planning has already begun with the Outdoor Education Team and John Muir Trust.

There will be a raft of after school activities, lunch clubs, transition events, inter school sports days, multi activity days for 1 and 2 teacher schools, school trips, health days and work to develop school to club links and increase the number of volunteers working with our team.

Pupils receiving their Young Leader Certificates

2010 has arrived and the schools in the Lerwick Cluster are all involved in active projects.

At Sound Primary I am involved with two Fun Fit groups which meet each week to help pupils with motor skills and activities to promote self- confidence

The Playvan, with lots of  exciting equipment, has a visit to Bells Brae and Sound for nursery , P1 and P2 pupils

“Chatterbox Fitness “ project involves eight volunteers from P7 at Sound  taking part in an exercise and activity programme with elderly  day-care clients at Taing House. This project is in its second year now and happens on a Friday afternoon from January to the end of March. Both clients and pupils get a lot from the experience and I hope to keep the project going next year.

After school clubs at Clickimin for both Sound and Bells Brae are Rock-it-ball, and hockey for P6/7 and during the summer term both these schools use outdoor areas for after-school clubs such as netball, football and hockey.

Rugby for p5/6/7 is an opportunity for pupils to experience the game for the first time with Daniel Meadows , a student working with Scottish Rugby and Active Schools.

At Bells Brae Donna Murray (PE) and myself with help from Megan Smith , a 5th Year pupil from AHS , have been involved in an active lunchtime club with ASN pupils . Fun with exercise, ribbons, apparatus and games- enjoyed by all.

The “peat stack relay” with Bressay pupils was an idea to join up two small schools , Bressay and Uyeasound . The plan was for pupils to build a small peat stack at their school, roughly same dimensions , and take a video of the event then let both schools see the videos at a later date . This involved some IT expertise of course and quite a few bags of peats !

Bressay and Hamnavoe meet up at Bressay School for a joint health day so lots of planning – walk, dance, yoga and a big quiz.  Also  a taste of new and exotic fruits but also some Shetland produce.

Cycle training for P6 pupils over several weeks in all the schools is a big part of the summer term . Firstclub golf for P5 pupils happens in the summer term as well and is a great introduction to the game of golf.

I look forward to doing activity walks with nursery pupils in both Bells Brae and Sound and a visit to Foula school is on the horizon.

Secondary Girls in Sport Golf Activity

As my remit is secondary schools (and also assistant for Lerwick primaries) I decided to try running some new activities for secondary only pupils during the summer break.  Although there was little take-up for football or basketball there was huge success with the less traditional activities – windsurfing, clay pigeon shooting and a week of dance camp.  I am now armed with lots of ideas for planning a selection of secondary only activities for next year!

At Anderson High School, there is a variety of lunchtime activities including dance, football, hockey, volleyball and netball.  The activities will change each term so different year groups have the opportunity to try different activities.  I am also planning to run an after school block of activities at Clickimin Centre for AHS pupils.  The activities offered will include climbing wall, trampoline, spin cycling and jazz dance.

My focus to date has been the Anderson High School and I am looking forward to working with other secondary schools in Shetland this year.

Future plans for secondary schools include a pedometer loan scheme, Fit for Girls groups, Activity Fest (community club information day), Give it a Go sessions and Sports Leader training programmes.

Cycling group in gulberwick

It’s looking like another busy year for schools in the South and West of Shetland.

Each new school year starts the same way; by planning the events, programmes and training for the year ahead – and that’s the easy bit! Trying to find venues, dates and times that fit in and around each school’s timetable is the real challenge!

Thankfully the teaching and school staff are always keen to have Active Schools input and are really helpful when it comes to finding opportunities to run training and after school activities.

This year I’m aiming to develop more cycling opportunities across Shetland. In addition to the Scottish Cycle Safety Scheme (formerly know as Cycling Proficiency) I’m hoping to offer Mountain Biking Taster Days and Bike Handling Sessions. I’m keen to get kids out on their bikes for recreation or as a means of transport and giving them the road safety knowledge, bike handling and maintenance skills is a great way to do this.

To foster better use of the quality coaching opportunities in Shetland I’ve arranged a series of out-of-school-hour activities to encourage kids to “come and try” different sports. And, if they want to continue, then progress onto their local club coaching. The other programmes I’ll be running this year include Soccer 1, Sports Leader and Young Leader Awards, First Clubgolf and the new Scottish Rugby HHEAPS programme.

Pupil jumping from cliff on outdoor day

The Summer term marks the home stretch before the Summer holidays and is a time when we look forward to some finer weather where we can get outside and enjoy being active in the outdoors. Some of these activities include Cycle Training, Club Golf, Walking Programmes and Football to name but a few.

In many of the Primary Schools in the North Cluster the Primary 6’s are beginning the Scottish Cycle Training Scheme. This is a 6 week block of sessions working towards building the bairn’s confidence to cycle on the roads and how to stay safe while doing so. Many bairns enjoy cycling at this time of year and many already cycle to school so this is an excellent course to have completed before the summer holidays and hopefully some sunshine arrives!

The 3 Secondary schools in the Cluster are coming to the end of participating in the Soccer 1 initiative, with the final tournament being played in late May. This is the culmination of many weeks of indoor training and tournaments and will see the finale being played as an outdoor 6-a-side tournament, played on the pitches at Clickimin. All 3 schools have a boys and girls team entered and hopefully the weekly training sessions will have paid off and we will see some great performances on the day.

Finally, this will be my last term working as the Active Schools Co-ordinator for the North Cluster as I will be starting maternity leave at the end of June. I am hoping to return to my post in July 2011 and get back into the schools again in the new school year in August 2011. I have really enjoyed the last 2 years working in such a diverse cluster of schools and will keep you all posted on the new arrival, due in July!
