active schools and curriculum for excellence
Delivering interesting and exciting Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport (PEPAS) both in curricular and extra-curricular time can inspire and motivate young people, teams and individuals in a magical way that a maths worksheet or reading exercise can often fail to do. Active Schools believe much of the fulfilment of life’s experiences can be found through PEPAS:
- Physical Engagement – being there to take part
- Cognitive Engagement – thinking about why they are there to take part
- Emotional Engagement – provoking feeling through thinking and taking part
PEPAS instructors have been described as ‘weavers of magic’ in children and Active Schools strongly believes that knowledgeable and enthusiastic coaches, teachers and young leaders can inspire their young people to enjoy PEPAS activities in a way that could shape their lives.
Active Schools is taking a lead role in developing additional physical activity opportunities to sit alongside high quality physical education in schools. The team have developed ‘Active Schools and a Curriculum for Excellence’ to train and support staff to help build their own magic in their schools.

Purpose of the document
Click on the image to view full screen.
The purpose of the document is to share Active School’s physical activity programmes, designed to get more children, more active, more often. The document should provide greater equality of delivery across schools through staff training and is designed to maximise the speed and ease of selecting suitable activities and training and to minimise the time required of working through experiences and outcomes. The document explicitly links Active Schools to a Curriculum for Excellence which supports staff planning and monitoring and ensures the quality of delivery of each activity. The document includes a range of ideas to include in to a class teacher’s physical activity time.

The key to the document is in its design. There are vertical and horizontal coloured tabs with each activity which reflect the theme of the activity and which curriculum level the activity is suited to. The ‘Training’ weblink, indicated by the orange or blue symbol, is on every page where training is available, through our online training calendar to our CPD courses endorsed by schools service.

The document is ‘live’. It will be updated with new activities and programmes when they have been developed by the Active Schools team. The online training calendar will also be updated regularly. Please print off a paper copy of the document and scribble notes on the notes pages and share ideas between staff and with your Active Schools Co-ordinator.
