Business Inspections

Why do we inspect businesses?
Trading Standards staff carry out inspections to ensure that all goods and services offered for sale are:

  • safe,
  • correctly priced,
  • accurately described, and
  • weighed or measured accurately.

When do we inspect businesses?
As inspections need to represent a real situation, we usually carry them out without prior notice.

The frequency of inspection depends on our assessment of the risk to consumers of non-compliance, which is based on a nationally agreed risk assessment scheme combined with additional local knowledge (such as complaints or other relevant information about particular businesses).
