Litter
Do you have someone responsible within your building/service for litter/dog fouling issues on your land?
Litter is both a visual eyesore and a health/environmental hazard. Each building/service should have a plan as to how to deal with this. If it is on your ground you are responsible for cleaning it up. Chief sources are poorly maintained litter bins/storage areas, staff members/members of the public smoking outside, passers by dropping litter or not cleaning up after dogs and windblown litter from elsewhere.
Each building/service should have someone whose responsibility it is to deal with these issues. Find out who is responsible for your building. Where staff or public smoke outside your building you must supply and monitor suitable smoking waste containers.
Have you written into service contracts requirements for de-littering of sites before and after works?
Where grass cutting or repair works to roads and buildings are carried out, the site should be left pristine. It is the contract manager’s duty to ensure that all surplus materials are removed – including advisory signs after the work is complete.
Can you ask employees who are out of the office on duty to report litter, flyposting, flytipping or graffiti to Cleansing Services?
It would be helpful if they could report any such instances seen by them on their travels to the Cleansing staff (tel: 01595 744800) so that appropriate clean ups could be organised.
Are staff aware that throwing litter out of vehicles could cost them a £50.00 fine?
A high percentage of Shetland litter is thrown out of vehicles in transit. This greatly affects the visual amenity of some areas.
