In January 2006 Shetland Islands Council approved the adoption of an environmental management system for the Council as a whole and adopted a Sustainable Development Implementation Plan.  In January 2007 the Council signed the Climate Change Declaration also requiring us to deliver certain clear target changes.

Many of the changes are simple but taken cumulatively across Shetland have a large impact.

Take time out to read through the guides and information on this section of the intranet and Choose to make a Difference to our impact on the environment.

The world is now facing up to the global threat of unsustainable development.  Increasingly companies and organisations are recognising that the environment is a management issue and not just a matter of compliance.

Unsustainable development across the world is changing habitats and climates, over exploiting resources and causing pollution.  Already even in the United Kingdom we are feeling the consequences. It has been calculated that if everyone continues to live as we do we will soon need three Planet Earths to sustain us in raw materials.

Facing up to these challenges means changing the way we live as individuals, families, businesses and organisations.
