The Tidy Business Standards

KSB LogoSIC LogoThe Tidy Business Scheme is an annual national award scheme aimed at helping businesses raise awareness of good practice methods for waste management, and assist them in developing opportunities for waste prevention and recycling. It is run by Keep Scotland Beautiful in association with the Shetland Islands Council and is available free to all commercial premises.

The 3 levels of award are:

Tidy Business Standards Bronze Award

Bronze - Business meets all statutory Duty of Care requirement for collecting, storing and disposing of commercial waste.

Tidy Business Standards Silver AwardSilver - Business complies with bronze criteria, as well as showing commitment to waste reuse, recycling and minimisation. SIC Environment and Resource Management Unit can offer help by conducting free waste audits.

Tidy Business Standards Gold AwardGold - Business meets all Bronze and Silver criteria, as well as playing a part in actively improving their local environment and aiding community enhancement.

 

The Tidy Business Scheme is a nationally recognised environmental initiative and forms an introduction to environmental management systems.

Being a Tidy Business offers several advantages:

  • It can help to save money by reducing waste costs
  • It proves to customers that you are an environmentally responsible business
  • Demonstrates full compliance with waste management legislation
  • Provides good, positive media opportunities
  • Rewards your business's commitment to improving the local environment
  • Provides you with full advice of waste minimisation and other recycling opportunities
  • Forms a first step towards an environmental management system

Businesses can join the scheme at any time throughout the year, once you join a representative from the Environment and Resource Management Unit will arrange a site visit to go through the initial requirements of the scheme and offer advice on achieving the level of award you are aiming for. You will then be assessed for award at a later date either by a member of Environmental Management and Resource Management Unit staff or Keep Scotland Beautiful Staff. Certificates and promotional material are awarded annually.
