Commercial Refuse Collection Service
From April 2010 the way businesses and organisations are charged for waste collection and disposal is changing. If your waste is not presented in an appropriate manner from this date it will NOT be collected.
There will be a number of different methods available for storing and disposing of your waste in the correct manner: Coloured Sacks, Stickers (for bulky waste/cardboard boxes full of waste), Wheeled Bins (currently available in Community council areas Lerwick, Scalloway, Dunrossness, Gulberwick Quarff and Cunningsburgh, Burra and Tronda (inc. East Voe), Whiteness Weisdale and Tingwall and Bressay) , and Skips.
Under the new system you will be charged according to the quantity of your waste. This means that you will be charged for each individual sack, bundle or, if you opt for a wheeled bin, the amount of times your bin is emptied. To view a leaflet detailing different options available, please click here.
This new system is designed to be tailored around your needs. You now have the flexibility to decide not only how often you want your waste picked up, but also how you would like to present it for collection. It will be fairer for you, with those that produce low levels of waste no longer subsidising the larger producers, and everyone paying according to the amount of waste they produce, rather than for a level of service they might not need.
Coloured Sacks
Blue commercial waste sacks, which can hold up to 70 litres of waste, can be used to replace current sacks used. These are available in rolls of 50 and can be purchased from Infrastructure Services office at Grantfield in Lerwick, or you can order online and have them delivered (details below). If you wish to continue using your current refuse sacks then please see the sticker option below.
Cost - £38.04 for a roll of 50 sacks
Refuse should be presented in a neat and tidy manner on the day of collection. To view a leaflet on the correct and incorrect presentation of commercial refuse please click here.

Stickers
Stickers can be attached to bulkier items, bundles of cardboard (around the same size as a full sack) or on sacks of refuse to cover their collection/disposal costs. Far more convenient than cramming huge sheets of cardboard and boxes into sacks. These are available in rolls of 50 and can be purchased from Infrastructure Services office at Grantfield in Lerwick, or you can order online and have them delivered (details below).
Cost - £38.04 for a roll of 50 stickers

Wheeled Bins
Currently available in Community council areas Lerwick, Scalloway, Dunrossness, Gulberwick Quarff and Cunningsburgh, Burra and Tronda (inc. East Voe), Whiteness Weisdale and Tingwall and Bressay.
If you opt for a wheeled bin collection, you will pay an annual standing charge to cover the hire/rental of the bin, and a further charge according to how many times in a week you want it emptied. There will be no need to buy Coloured Sacks. The cleanliness and hygiene of the wheeled bin is entirely your responsibility so you might want to make sure it’s emptied often enough to make sure it doesn’t become a threat to hygiene. You might also want to keep putting your waste in refuse sacks before depositing it in your wheeled bin, to help keep it clean.
240 Litre Wheeled Bin
These bins hold 2 to 4 black bags.
These will be the standard issue for the domestic
waste collection, but a limited number will be
available for the commercial collection.
Cost for uplift; £1.90
Annual Standing Charge; £7.66
Size: 580 wide x 740 deep x 1100 high
360 Litre Wheeled Bin
These bins hold up to 5 normal sacks of waste. Probably the most convenient size for most needs,
it’s small enough to be easily stored and
maneuvered, and can hold a good amount of
waste.
Cost for uplift; £2.84
Annual Standing Charge; £14.36
Size: 665 wide x 880 deep x 1115 high
660 Litre Wheeled Bin
These bins hold around 9 normal sacks of waste. Ideal if you produce a moderate amount of nonperishable
waste, as it holds a lot and wont need
to be emptied often.
Cost for uplift; £5.17
Annual Standing Charge; £69.94
Size: 1265 wide x 740 deep x 1320 high
1100 Wheeled Bin
These bins hold up to 16 normal sacks of
waste. If you produce a large amount of waste, these
beasts’ll swallow it all. You’ll need a lot of
room to site them, though.
Cost for uplift; £8.44
Annual Standing Charge; £72.13
Size: 1270 wide x 1000 deep x 1380 high
Skips
These come in a variety of sizes. If you
produce a lot of waste, and have the
room to site one, a skip may be the most
suitable option.

If you wish to opt out of the collection service you can deliver your refuse direct to the Gremista Waste Management Facility and Recycling Centre or the Energy Recovery Plant and pay a charge at the gate, details of which can be viewed here.
You are under no obligation to use the waste collection and disposal service provided
by the council, and are free to use other methods as you see fit.
You are, however, under a legal obligation to provide evidence that you have disposed
of your waste in a legally approved manner. This means you will have to be
able to provide a copy of Waste Transfer Notes regarding your waste should you be
asked to do so. Failure to provide adequate evidence of legally approved disposal
could result in a fine up to £1,000.![]()
