Household Refuse Collection

The Council provides refuse sacks for you to store your rubbish in - 50 sacks are delivered to each domestic property in April every year, free of charge. Extra sacks can be purchased from the Gremista Waste Management Facility and Recycling Centre and Grantfield offices, Lerwick, or delivered to your property with the essy kert. Sacks can also be purchased through the Council's Online Payments facility. The 2011/2012 price per box is £17 including VAT.

Please assist your refuse collector by:

• Not making your sacks too heavy - use a second sack
• Double wrapping your food waste and nappies
• Placing broken/glass/sharp objects in a cardboard box marked "Sharp
  Objects"
• Covering sacks with netting, carpet or sheets
• Recycling glass in a Bottle Bank

Please place your sacks out for collection as near as possible to the time of arrival of the essy kert and NOT at any other time. Sacks should be placed out at the kerbside and covered with netting. Netting can be collected from Gremista Waste Management Facility, Lerwick, 01595 743960, or delivered to your property with the essy kert, free of charge.

Domestic wheeled bin collections are also available in Community council areas Lerwick, Scalloway, Dunrossness, Gulberwick Quarff and Cunningsburgh, Burra and Tronda (inc. East Voe), Whiteness Weisdale and Tingwall and Bressay.

Please note: Not every location will be suitable for wheeled bins, areas that already have a communal refuse store will not have their waste collected if presented in wheeled bins and If you have a wheeled bin you are entirely responsible for presenting it in a safe manner on collection day, and for it’s security and upkeep.

Bruck Boxes

Bruck boxes should be sited within easy access of the kerbside. Please ensure your box is a safe design and suitable size for lifting full sacks out of, for advice, please contact Environmental Services.

Boxes can be purchased from Environmental Services:

• Plastic boxes holding 4 sacks cost £127.50 including VAT

or Shetland Amenity Trust:

• Wooden boxes holding 7 sacks cost £72 including VAT
• Wooden boxes holding 5 sacks cost £48 including VAT

The cleanliness of bruck boxes is the responsibility of the householder.

Bulky Domestic Refuse

Skips are available seven days a week at the Gremista Waste Management Facility for householders to take their items for disposal. In areas outwith Lerwick, skips are provided via Community Councils for householders to place their bulky items in all year round; these skips are for household furniture, household goods, DIY waste and garden waste ONLY. Contact your local Community Council Clerk for details.
