Public Toilets

The service involves the provision, operation and management of the majority of public toilets in Shetland. The Council is empowered to provide public toilet facilities within their area but is placed under no legal obligation to do so.

There is a requirement to maintain and operate facilities so as to prevent nuisance and pollution and to ensure the health and safety of users. Public demand for the provision of this service is at a relatively high level and as a result the Council continues to provide toilets at 34 sites, please see our detailed map of Public Toilet locations or view our Public Toilets Leaflet for further information on the provision.

Lerwick Toilets

The Lerwick toilets at The Esplanade, Grantfield, Clickimin and The Knab remain directly operated by Cleansing Services. They require full-time supervision and servicing as a result of the particularly high demand placed upon the facilities. The other Lerwick toilets are the responsibility of Community Services.
