Community Council Funding

Core Funding

Every Community Council in Shetland receives core funding from the Shetland Islands Council to assist with annual running costs. For details of the amount of funding received, click on the link below:

Community Council Funding

Core funding is spent on the following areas:

  • Administration
  • Environmental services
  • Grants to local/district groups
  • Roads


Community Development Fund

Community Councils in Shetland can also apply to our Community Development Fund, for funding to either carry out projects or distribute to local community groups:

Over the last 5 years the CDF scheme has enabled Community Councils to increase its grant budgets by applying for a Distribution Fund. However many Community Councils have delivered local projects using CDF funding including:

  • New noticeboards
  • Purchase of picnic tables, planters and benches
  • Production of coastal map and walking trail panels
  • Access improvements to local beaches
  • Community skips for bulky waste
  • Installing interpretive boards and visitor information
  • Upgrading a community track
  • Feasibility studies
  • Hosting participatory budgeting events
  • Upgrade and repair of War memorials
  • Footpath improvements
  • Equipment purchase
