Pest Control
The Environmental Health Service has a responsibility under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 to ensure that infestations of Rats and Mice are eradicated.
This does not mean that we will carry out the work ourselves, but we can serve a Notice instructing that the work must be carried out.
Can you carry out treatment for me?
The Council has a pest control treatment service - for non-commercial premises only and for which a fee is charged.
Who is responsible for treatment?
Generally speaking it is either the owner or the occupier of the land who is responsible for ensuring that the necessary treatment is carried out to eradicate any infestation. If you have any doubt please contact Environmental Health.
How do we deal with your request?
When you make a request you will be asked several questions to determine the following:
If you are the owner, occupier or tenant – you will be advised of the cost of treatment in the case of residential properties and if you agree an officer will contact you to arrange to survey and treat the infestation.
If you are on Commercial or Industrial premises, we do not offer a treatment service. There are contractors who will offer eradication treatment and long-term prevention programs. Check telephone directories for details.
What happens after the survey?
If the infestation is confirmed to your own property you will be asked to sign an agreement for payment and then treatment will start.
What if my request is about wasps or other insects?
If you are an owner or occupier and the infestation is on your own property you will be advised of the cost of treatment in the case of residential properties and if you agree an officer will contact you to arrange to survey and treat the infestation.
What if my problem is seagulls, rabbits and other birds?
Environmental Health will deal with Seagulls, Rabbits or other Birds in certain circumstances.
How much will I be charged?
All these charges include VAT
£45.00 Residential Property Advice / Survey Visit.
£108.00 Treatment (including three visits), which includes advice and survey. This fee covers the first three treatments.
£19.50 Each for treatments required after that.
£0 For people in receipt of income-based benefits (income support / pension credit) for public health pest only (rats, mice, cockroaches & bedbugs).
Can I deal with it myself?
Some pests can be easily treated. Products for treatment may be available from local hardware stores. Our officers will be able to advise you as to what the best course of action may be.
