Hurricane Book Club

Back for 2021- our biggest book club yet! The Hurricane Book Club is run across Scotland and beyond with LIVE events being hosted simultaneously by Shetland, Glasgow & Falkirk libraries. If you can’t join in person, you can join the conversation online via Twitter, following the #HurricaneBookClub hashtag.  New for this season, due to the need to be socially distanced, group meetings will take place by video call.

Our first meeting will be on Thursday 25 February at 6pm, where we will be discussing ‘The Young Team’ by Graeme Armstrong. Inspired by the experiences of its author, The Young Team is an energetic novel, full of the loyalty, laughs, mischief, boredom, violence and threat of life on these streets. It looks beyond the tabloid stereotypes to tell a powerful story about the realities of life for young people in Britain today.

The second book, to be discussed on Thursday 29 April, will be the 2020 Booker Prize winner ‘Shuggie Bain’ by Douglas Stuart.  It tells the story of the youngest of the three children, Shuggie, growing up with his alcoholic mother, Agnes, in the 1980s, in Thatcher-era post-industrial working-class Glasgow, Scotland.

We will be concluding this season on Thursday 24 June, where we will be talking about Cathy Rentzenbrink’s ‘Dear Reader’, a moving, funny and joyous exploration of how books can change the course of your life, packed with recommendations from one reader to another.
