Young Writer competition 2020

The Young Shetland Writer award is run annually by Shetland Library. There are three categories: age 7 - 9, age 10 - 12 and age 13 - 18. An additional prize for best piece of writing in the Shetland dialect will also be awarded. It is open to all young people in Shetland, and is publicised through schools and the public Library.

The theme this year was The Cave

This year’s Young Writer competition ended up being a bit different due to the school closures in March, but we were able to work with library staff, teaching staff, parents and pupils to ensure that all entries arrived by e-mail before the closing date of 31st of May.  As well as the six winning stories, there were some additional stories and poems which the judges felt deserved praise, and letters are going out to those young writers with added judge’s comments.  Shetland Library would like to offer a huge vote of thanks to everyone who helped make Young Writer 2020 a success.  The total number of entries received was 248.
