Operational note – Road closure: B9073 (‘Black Gaet’)

Road closed sign

The B9073 road, known as the ‘Black Gaet’ will soon close to all through traffic, due to the current wintry conditions.

UPDATE 07.04.2021 - The Black Gaet road  (B9073) has re-opened to through traffic this morning (Wed 7th).

Continued build-up of lying snow on the road is making driving hazardous and a decision has been taken to close the road to all traffic with immediate effect.

Council staff are currently placing signs at the two junctions with the A970, at the west junction, nearest Scalloway; and at the east junction, nearest Gulberwick and Lerwick.

The road will reopen when weather conditions improve and the road can be cleared of any accumulated snow.   An alternative route exists via Lerwick.

Weather conditions across Shetland today have seen cold northerly gales, and frequent prolonged snow showers, leading to snow drifts in many places.  Most public bus services have been cancelled and inter-island ferry services suspended.
