What happens to our recycling

Under the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012, all materials collected separately for recycling must be recycled, so all the materials we collect from your property or that you take to a bring site will go to be recycled.

Our most commonly recycled materials include:

  • Aerosols, drinks cans and food tins: After collection, they are separated into aluminium and steel and sent to a recycling plant in Lerwick and Lanark
  • Batteries: Sent to a recycling plant in Perth
  • Card, cardboard and paper: After collection it is sent to a recycling plant in Dundee
  • Cartons: After collection, they are separated and sent to a recycling plant in Halifax
  • Clothing, shoes and textiles: These banks are emptied by the Salvation Army for sorting and recycling
  • Cooking oil: Sent to a recycling plant in Glasgow, where it is turned into bio-fuel
  • Electrical appliances: Sent to a recycling plant in Perth
  • Energy saving bulbs and fluorescent tubes: Sent to a recycling plant in Perth
  • Glass: Sent to a recycling plant in Motherwell
  • Plastic bottles: After collection, they are separated and sent to a recycling plant in Lanark
  • Tyres: Sent to a recycling plant in Dunbar/Motherwell
